Botanical Illustration

Field Breaks Art has for many years been a leading provider of botanical art and illustration courses in Derbyshire.  Though the aftermath of Covid-19 left our previous panoply of courses a little depleted, we are working hard to continue to deliver quality tuition, inviting professional leading artists and practitioners to share their knowledge and skills. 

Though our courses are suitable for all abilities, we have added a new series of day classes specifically for those new to botanical illustration, where you can explore techniques, try out materials and explore subject matter, or just join in for a relaxed day with likeminded company.

To make it easier to find our botanical workshops, we have complied a comprehensive list detailing our upcoming botanical workshops, based mostly in Derbyshire at either the Art Room in Barlow, or at the Nightingale Centre at Great Hucklow, with the addition of Ness Botanical Gardens in the Wirral.  We hope to see you again soon!

Botanical Batik!

4th May 2022 at 10:00 am - 4:00 pm  |  The Art Room, Barlow, Derbyshire  |  Day £99

With step-by-step instructions from artist Sue Rhodes, spend the day learning the basics of the fascinating and traditional craft of batik. Using hot wax on fabric, explore colour layering, special tools and techniques involved to produce your own botanical study. Suitable for complete beginners.

Beginners' Botanical Illustration - Painting and Drawing

Spend an enjoyable day in like-minded company, learning the first steps of the absorbing art of botanical illustration.  We will cover the initial drawing stage in graphite, using exercises to help with shape and form and progress our drawings using coloured pencil or watercolour as a colourwash.  Suitable for all abilities.

Floral Watercolours with Lesley Linley

Spend an enjoyable day using the vibrancy of watercolours to create a realistic portrait of seasonal flowers.  With an inspiring demonstration and expertinstruction, advice will be given on composition, colour and transparency, using tonal contrast to bring reality and a feeling of light to your work.  Suitable for all abilities.

Wildflowers and Hedgerows

12th July 2022 at 10:00 am - 3:30pm  |  The Art Room, Barlow, Derbyshire  |  Day £79

Inspired by the surrounding hedgerows and verges of The Art Room studio, we will capture our finds in detailed watercolour or pencils in the studio.  With useful demonstrations, we will look at colour choice, blending, layout and composition, and will create a lovely study page or portrait of summer, with individual guidance and advice.

Painting the Summer Season - Botanical art and illustration in Watercolours

10 - 12 August 2022 - Nightingale Centre, Great Hucklow, Derbyshire £420 residential, £220 non-residential

Learn about the fascinating history of botanical art and illustration on this residential course, which is aimed at both complete beginners and improvers.  Using watercolours and working directly from a choice of specimens, you will develop your knowledge and skills of of botanical art.  

A Celebration of Seasonal Fruits, Ornamental gourds & Seed Pods

20 - 22nd Sept 2022 - Nightingale Centre, Great Hucklow, Derbyshire £420 residential, £220 non-residential

From lovely ornamental gourds to colourful seed pods and interesting seed heads, join artist Julie Small to create individual studies or consider a seasonal composition in this botanical illustration workshop.  Suitable for all abilities and those interested in drawing in detail.

How to paint flora and fauna in Watercolours or Gouache

Wednesday 12th - Thursday 13th October 2022 Ness Botanic Gardens, Ness, Little Neston, Wirral CH64 4AY  |  £242

Join one of the UK’s leading botanical illustrators, Simon Williams, for a two-day workshop painting flora and fauna in gouache or watercolour with one to one tuition and demonstrations.  This workshop is geared to help beginners and take the more experienced artist to the next level.

Natural History - Botanical Illustration

8th November 2022 at 10:00 am - 3:30pm  |  The Art Room, Barlow, Derbyshire  |  Day £79

Using watercolour, coloured pencil, graphite, or pen and ink, choose from leaves, fruit, shells, feathers, pebbles, seaweed, nuts and seed heads and enjoy working on a composition with likeminded company.  You may also wish to use the workshop to design a Christmas card.  Suitable for all abilities, with subject matter and refreshments included.
