Whether you are new to art and want to learn where to start; if you are a more experienced painter wanting to improve or change your approach; or are just looking to take a step back and paint purely for relaxation and enjoyment, Hazel will give lots of individual guidance to help you find a successful and enjoyable path using colours, lines, textures and patterns from our stunning Devon surroundings.  Working as a small group we will share both the ideas and unexpected joys of working on location in a stunning location, enjoying likeminded company and delicious food throughout the stay.  We hope you will join us!

With demonstrations and mini-workshops to help us loosen up, Hazel will introduce various different techniques, such as mark making skills and working with a palette knife, which will offer helpful and creative ideas both on-location and back in the studio. Our location

Set beyond Exmoor, North Devon, the expansive coastline is majestic, famously quoted in 1799 by the poet Robert Southey as “England's Little Switzerland”. The deep and wooded valley surrounding us is one of the largest remaining areas of semi-natural ancient woodland in the South West.

Based in Lynmouth, this restorative retreat is designed to give you the space to develop a skill or technique that is important to you, guided by an expert in the field.  Taking time for yourself, slowing down and relaxing into the location, you will enjoy being with like-minded people.  The unique nature of the experience is heightened by the wonderful setting, with the landscape beginning right on the doorstep.  We promise a fulfilling experience that will leave you wanting more.

Hosted at the relaxing Seaview Villa Devon, we will take care of your every need, giving you an unforgettable boutique experience blending exquisite cuisine, relaxation, art, nature, social and coastal charm.

In addition to the wonderful coastal walks, sauna & swims are also scheduled, but are very much optional!

Non-painting partners are welcome to join - please doenquire for costs.

Please note you are strongly advised to take out travel insurance as we cannot offer refunds.

Your tutor

Hazel is a landscape painter from Derbyshire, who enjoys nothing better than being on location with a sketchbook capturing Britain’s wonderfully varied landscape.  Keeping to a small scale or using a limited palette, she uses this “restriction” to help her distil the essence of a scene.  She works mainly in acrylics for their versatility when out of doors, usually finishing a painting all in one sitting, or by making pen and watercolour sketches for use back in her studio.  As well as coastlines, woodlands and townscapes, she captures quiet unassuming scenes that explore the subtle moods of the seasons, exploring forgotten corners and unusual views away from the beaten path.

What is included?

  • 3 full days of art tuition, coastal walks, wild swimming & sea sauna (optional)
  • Delicious fine dining, home made and locally sourced cuisine, all included

Lynmouth Harbour - a perfect place for sketching

    How will the course run?

Your stay will begin with a welcome drink and evening meal, with chance to get to know each other and relax into our surroundngs.  Each morning will begin with a walk outdoors to the local surroundings, to explore the wooded valleys, seashore, quaint village and quirks such as the vernacular railway.  We will gather ideas and make sketches as we go.  Each day we will start by focussing on ways to relax and slow down - creating artwork is best when we are happy and calm!

After lunch, the afternoons will be spent sketching or painting at a chosen spot, or if the weather is poor, we will retreat to the studio to work from our sketchbooks.  Each day your tutor will give demonstrations to give you ideas and get you in the mood.  Each day we will "show and tell" our little wins and have a laugh over our "disasters" - they are all building blocks towards a creative experience unique to each of us.

Please note - some walking will be involved, so please bring suitable clothing and be prepared to make short forays up hills and down to the coast and village harbour.  However, we will take our time and sketch as we go so nobody will be out of breath!
