The Nightingale Centre, Great Hucklow, Near Tideswell, Derbyshire SK17 8RH
Step into the Spring time with your watercolours and enjoy working with a small group of likeminded participants in the peaceful surroundings of the Nightingale Centre, in the heart of the Peak District in Derbyshire. We will make detailed studies of flowers, plants and leaves which are blooming at this time of year. Professional artist Sue McHugh SBA fellow will give demonstrations and lead us towards a colourful painting composition, and show us how to exploit our watercolours to depict the intricate details of plants found at this light-filled time of year.
This fascinating course is aimed at both complete beginners and those who are already experienced. Using watercolours and working directly from a choice of natural specimens, you will develop your knowledge and skills of botanical art, learning how to represent three dimensional objects on a flat surface.
Your tutor Sue will guide you from the starting points, explaining how best to sketch out your specimen and find an interesting composition. With help on colour mixing and pigments, Sue will give individual guidance to help you explore the finer points and look at ways to create a realistic representation.
Whether you are already a keen botanical illustrator or are completely new to the field, the course is an ideal place to work alongside other like-minded artists, share ideas and see work in progress first-hand.
Arrive from 3 pm on Monday 13th April, departing 2 pm on Thursday 16th April 2026.
The programme details, along with a suggested list of materials to bring will be forwarded around four weeks prior to the workshop start date.
