Sketching on location in Ironbridge

Monday  12th to Thursday 15th May 2025

Coalport Village Hall, 34 Coalport High St, Coalport, Telford TF8 7HT

Landscape and Industry - Location sketching in Ironbridge using line and wash with Hazel Money

This four day workshop will explore the world inside and outside your sketchbook. Using the magnificent surroundings of Ironbridge in Shropshire for our starting point, we will make trips outdoors to gather information and take inspiration for compositions. The week begins with a series of short exercises to help you get the feel of your pen and all the myriad of things it will do for you, before we set foot outdoors. The addition of watercolours will bring structure, colour and mood to your work, rather than dominating the landscape.

Your tutor Hazel Money will guide you through a comprehensive journey of artistic discovery, starting on a small scale with very simple materials, giving short demonstrations and providing examples of how you may wish to work. Tuition and guidance will be available throughout the week, along with a series of photographic reference materials in case of rain.

The tuition will be very much a suggestion of what you can achieve, you can of course decide to take your work in whatever direction it leads you. Using the comfortable location of Coalport Village Hall as our studio base, we will make forays outdoors throughout the week, with lots of ideas for subjects and methods of working. There is also a myriad of museums to explore which will afford many starting points. Our base is right across the road from the Coalport china museum, also the canal and river, and the inclined plane, all of which will provide subject matter on our doorstep. We will make short journeys into the village to draw other locations, such as the buildings and bridges of the gorge. Please note car journeys are taken at your own risk.

Please bring with you suitable clothing and footwear, as there may be rain during our trip. We will use our time and studio space accordingly during the week, hopefully being able to spend at least half our time out of doors.

Refreshments and savoury midday snacks will be provided each day at the hall, please bring a sandwich for the daytime, there is a kitchen you will be welcome to use.

The course begins at 10:00 on Monday morning, and finishes at 3:00 on the Thursday afternoon.

Your tutor

Hazel is an enthusiastic and relaxed tutor who will give short demonstrations to guide you forwards, and inspire you to try new techniques or ideas. With an emphasis on direct observation, Hazel will help you identify a subject that works for you, using a limited set of painting materials to keep things simple and relaxed. If you are quite new to art and are feeling hesitant, Hazel will show you ways to ease you in gently, giving you the confidence to try new techniques, and if you are a more experienced painter, you can rely on gaining lots of new tips and ideas that will really stretch your work to the next level.
